Changing AI hardware often means changing more than the bill. A team also has to move its model code, debugging habits and deployment process. On October 20, Google announced that TorchTPU is open source. Hugging Face announced native support across Transformers, Diffusers and its Kernels library on the same day.
A TPU is Google’s processor for AI workloads. TorchTPU adds it as a backend for PyTorch, the framework many teams already use to build models. Hugging Face’s examples select the TPU device directly, rather than maintaining a separate model implementation for that hardware.
The announcement covers both immediate execution, useful for debugging, and compiled execution, which prepares work for the device. Hugging Face notes that compilation takes place on the first call and can be reused for the same image size. A short demonstration and a long-running service therefore need different measurements.
Compatibility is still work in progress. Hugging Face reports remaining test failures and ongoing fixes. Google describes a wider set of integrations, some with their own preview status. Support for the backend should not be read as proof that every model, operator or surrounding tool works unchanged.
