Late on October 26, OpenAI announced three results it says its models produced: a proof of the local smoothing conjecture in every dimension, which would also settle the Kakeya and Stein restriction conjectures; a disproof of the Exponential Time Hypothesis, a widely assumed limit on how fast certain logic problems can be solved; and existence proofs for quantum field theories including quantum chromodynamics.
OpenAI says the math and computer science results were formalized in Lean, a proof checker, and published the AI-written proofs and Lean files on GitHub. External groups will examine them. The computer science group is led by Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi, who proposed the hypothesis, and Ryan Williams of MIT. A physics group led by David Gross will write up that result before materials are released. OpenAI says it does not seek academic credit.
These are claims awaiting independent verification. A Lean proof checks that the formal steps follow, but experts still need to confirm the formal statement matches the conjecture. Al Jazeera and other outlets reported the announcement on October 27.
